Air gapped / Data Diode backing up arrangement
With the news today UK GDP has apparently been measurably decreased by the well publicised JLR hack of their computer system, here is a simple air-gapped archiving / backup system which can easily be implemented on multi-TB sized systems. We have great tools available – we just need to use them!
- Data consistency ensured by O/S level snapshots
- One way data movement through
zfs sendorbtrfs send - Reasonable demand on the physically movable media through incremental
send - Space efficiency on the archiving side through de-duplicated, compressed, archiving system
- Disposable SD cards can be used for true “data diode” operation
- Possible to further physically separate the server and the writer of the SD card
